Why do I need a music licensing firm?

Music is a powerful and driving force in our society. From toddlers to teenagers to world renowned DJ’s - music brings people together and can be a reminder of a moment, a day, a period in your life which brings about joyful memories and wonderful associations. Armed with this knowledge - Producers, Directors and Music Supervisors utilize music on television, in commercials, on websites, in video games, in greeting cards and in advertising to move the consumer, to remind the viewer, to bring the person watching your film, your TV show or your commercial to be emotionally connected to what you are showing them.  Music has an incredible power to motivate people (have you ever seen someone work-out without an MP3 player on? I haven’t), inspire people (as I write this I am listening to music) and to be used as a tool to connect with people - could you imagine watching Titanic without the use of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” – I cannot! Music is used in therapy, both physical and mental, and from your aerobics class to your morning commute – music is always there with you. It is your companion through break-ups, weddings, parties and throughout life.

For all of these reasons, and many others, music is a valued commodity and to those that are the creators of the music it is their livelihood and rightfully so it is protected by something called copyright law. Due to copyright law the creators can continue to create music (also referred to as intellectual property) knowing that it will be protected by law against people that attempt to utilize it without permission. Because of the value of music and the right to protect it by those that created it, when music is utilized in a form that reaches the people in the masses, such as on television, in a film, on a website or a DVD, in a video game or in a greeting card, the music must be cleared, otherwise known as licensed. In order to utilize music created by someone other than yourself and other than music that is in the public domain, you must get permission and pay a fee to license the rights to the music, this process is referred to as music licensing and here at Interlink Music we are music licensing experts. We understand and keep you informed of every step in the process of clearing the song or music that you want for your project. We will take care of everything from requesting the music rights from the appropriate parties, following up, reading the music license (also referred to as a contract), facilitating payables to the rights owner (also know as the licensor(s)) and ensure that the quote for the music has been well negotiated and that the contract is in full accordance with the original parameters of the deal – as well as – in full accordance with the governing copyright laws.

A major part of clearing music is knowing the appropriate parties to contact in order to obtain music clearance. To a novice this research could take hours – even days – to find and when you do find the appropriate parties you may find your calls go unanswered as you do not yet have a relationship with the person you are calling. Here at Interlink Music our licensing experts have over ten years of licensing experience and have cleared everything from Cake to Madonna; from Frank Sinatra to U2. We have a Rolodex of the “go-to” people in the industry as well as the knowledge of the appropriate publishing owners, master owners, artist managers and the like. We have worked for and with major labels and have the working relationships to get your song cleared quickly, efficiently and for the appropriate rate.
